Vintage Outfit Post-Oodles of Poodles and some Pugs in Hats too!

Lately, while I am an eternal bulldog and pug addict, I have been really admiring poodles.  I blame the scores of gorgeous vintage poodle photos ,

and the delightful blog Time for Poodles and Friends.
So I decided to get a poodle of my own:

I got this adorable purse for my birthday from the Etsy shop Rabbit Heart Designs and its absolutely my favorite purse ever.  I liked it so much that I had fun putting together an entirely black and white outfit to go with it.

The hat was a Christmas gift from my sweet husband, the gloves I have had forever, the shoes are mod cloth, and the dress is the Mary Dress from Hey Day Vintage.   Its the same style as the Blue Dress I wore for Easter.  I absolutely love these Mary dresses because they are super easy care, don't wrinkle, and the rayon fabric completely resists pet hair!  This is the first black dress I have ever been able to wear without being coated in dog and cat hairs.

Weasley's hat is from Mattionline

Ping's hat is from Pug Posessed

The fabric of the dress really is amazing, after taking these pictures I was able to just brush of the dog hair.

Since their mama loves hats my pugs have learned to wear hats too, or at least for Special occasions like Easter.  Weasley's hat was made by Matti Online and Ping's hat was made by our dear friend Debbie of Pug Possessed.  Now I not only have my adorable pugs but a poodle to!

Two Recipes From Two Queenly Dog Lovers

Despite the fact that I have a small family consisting of only myself, my husband, and my pets, I have always loved having traditions.  One of my traditions is to make a tea party meal every year on Mother's Day weekend.

I tend to cook quite a bit for this event, far more then two can eat, so left overs are available throughout the week.  Every year I try something a bit different but there are two recipes that are always on the menu and both were created to honor British Queens who were also dog lovers.

Queen Victoria was a noted dog fanatic.   Her beloved spaniel Dash  was memoralized in potraits

and in this touching epigraph:

Here lies 'Dash'

The favorite spaniel of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria,
By whose command this Memorial was erected.
He died on the 20th December 1840, in his 9th year.
His attachment was without selfishness,
His playfulness without malice,
His fidelity without deceit.
Reader, if you would live beloved and die regretted,
profit by the example of 'Dash'.

In addition to Dash, Victoria owned collies, pugs, labradors, and pomeranians, as well as many other breeds.

An early advocate of animal rights Queen Victoria outlawed the barbaric practice of bull baiting and she was a patron of the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals, which due to her support became the RSPCA, Royal Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Victoria had a sweet tooth and was very fond of her afternoon tea.  The cake, Victoria Sponge, was created in her honor and a delicious cake it is too!

I use the recipe from the NYC restaurant, Tea and Sympathy which you can find here.  The only change I make is to use one cake pan and bake it a bit longer, and then slice the cake into two layers.  I find the batter a bit scant for two pans.

The second recipe is in honor of Queen Elizabeth, who as everyone knows has a life long fondness for Corgis.

This delicious salad was created for Elizabeth's coronation in 1953.

Coronation Chicken Salad

3-4 lbs of split chicken breasts, bone in and skin on
olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
Butter head lettuce
1 onion, chopped
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup mild curry powder
1/4 cup tomato puree
1/2 cup red wine or water
1 bay leaf
Juice of 1 lemon
Large can of apricot slices in juice, or several small cans I used 3 8 ounce cans, drained
1/4 cup Major Grey's mango chutney
1 cup mayonnaise

Rub the chicken breasts with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper.  Roast at 350 for 50 min to an hour until cooked through.  Cool and remove the skin and shred the meat.  Transfer to a large mixing bowl.

Melt the butter in a large sauce pan and add the onion and saute until translucent.  Stir in the curry powder, tomato puree, wine or water, bay leaf, lemon juice, drained apricots and chutney and simmer until thickened about 20 minutes.  Stir into the bowl with the chicken.  Let cool and stir in the mayonnaise.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.  Serve atop butter head lettuce or in sandwiches.

Celebretory Weekend

This weekend we celebrated two important events: Ping's guestimated 11 th birthday

and Weasley 2nd gotcha day.

Ping had a lovely dress from pug possessed on Etsy for her birthday. I think its the prettiest dress Ping has ever had and Deb's prices are very reasonable.  Her babies have been having some health issues lately and Im sure she would appreciate well wishes.  You can visit here.

In addition to her dress Ping got some treats and a Mr. Bubble toy.  Ping doesn't really do toys, so I'm sure Weasley will enjoy it.

Ping definitely liked the cookie:

and later everyone had ice cream.

All in all a successful celebratory day!

Happy Birthday Fred Astaire!

Today is See Beautiful.  The blog hop held the second Friday of every month and designed to celebrate all things beautiful in the every day.  I always see beautiful when I watch my favorite old films, and tommorow is the 115th anniversary of the birth of my very favorite classic film stare, Fred Astaire.

I've done a lot of Fred Astaire related posts on this blog, but I couldn't resist posting one of my favorite pictures of Fred taken in the 1960s. Doesn't he look very dapper with his pet Siamese cat?
and of course a dance:  Begin the Beguine from Broadway Melody of 1940 with Eleanor Powell.  Of course Astaire is best known for his dances with Ginger Roger's, but Powell was an incredibly gifted dance and this is an amazing number.

On another beautiful note my vintage blogging friend Jessica of Chronically Vintage has decided to open an Etsy shop.  Jessica is incredibly knowledgeable about vintage and her shop has many lovely things and is sure to soon have many more.   There are several beautiful dog themed items, barrettes and a brooch that really caught my eye,

-Thoughtless Thursday Lyndhurst Mansion

On April 12 we visited the Lyndhurst mansion with Bob in honor of his 7th birthday.  The Lyndhurst mansion

is a historic site in Tarry Town New York about 45 minutes outside New York City.  The gothic mansion and its surrounding grounds where built in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis.  The mansion passed through the hands of several families until the 1900s when it became the home of railroad magnate Jay Gould and his family.

In 1961 his daughter donated the mansion to the national historic trust preservation in her will.   From that time the mansion and ground have been open to the public.  You can tour the inside, but I never have, because the best thing about the Lyndhurst mansion is dogs are allowed on  the grounds!

A Tasty Treat-Fiore's Deli in Hoboken

On Saturday Weasley and Tubby accompanied us on a tasty outing.  As a lover of food and of old things the minute I read about Hoboken's Fiore's Deli, a 113  year old Italian Delicatessen I had to check it out.

Fiore's is famous for their roast beef an mozzarella sandwiches.  The pugs were very patient waiting for their Dad to pick up the sandwiches:

There was another little grey dog also waiting for their owner

Well worth the wait the sandwiches did not disappoint, and yes the pus got a taste.

After sandwiches we took a detour to the dog park where  a new larger dog run  for small breedswas lots of fun for Tubby and Weasley.
