My Old Man
Recently my husband and I have noticed some definite changes in Tubby, who just turned 14 March 29. 14 is an illustrious age for any dog and Tubby does show his advancing years. He is definitely blind, and almost entirely deaf, he also has arthritis and neurological issues that cause hind end weakness. Recently, we have noticed signs of doggie dementia as well. Thank goodness he still recognizes us, but he is confused about time, for example he wakes up frequently at night, and seems to be looking for meals at times other then meal times and then initially confused about eating at meal times. Thankfully, his appetite is still good. Since he has a suspected UTI right now, he is responding to antibiotics so knock on wood its nothing worse, he just had a full physical and the vet feels he looks good for 14. We have started him on choline for the dementia but I don't see much change yet. Its hard to see him go down hill, especially so soon after losing Norbert, but we know we are lucky to still have him with us. Any time he is happy and enjoying himself now is a double blessing which is why I got a thrill out of watching him enjoy this chew.

You are such a good momma, and are so good about staying on top of their care. We sure hope Tubby's medicine starts working for him. stella rose

Gentle hugs for this aging sweetheart. It sounds like he has a lot of his plate, medically speaking. Poor dear. Thank goodness he has loving "parents" in you and your husband to care for him in his golden years.

It's really hard to see our babies having age related issues. I'm sorry he sometimes gets confused due to dementia. Though, it's really a blessing to see him happy and enjoying life. Hugs to you xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt is tough to watch them age. It happens so quickly. I so wish dogs had been granted a longer life span, say like a parrot, who if you are lucky, you will have for your whole life! Maybe we need to do some gene splicing ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe are seeing some of the same things with Bailey. He had a great check up the Thursday before he got so uncomfortable. The meds are working for the UTI. But the weakness in his back legs is getting worse as time goes on. Most of the time mentally he seems fine but there are times when he appears lost. Hugs for Tubby and the rest of your gang

We so feel for you as it is the saddest of things to see them get old and struggle. Love and hugs to Tobby. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
It's tough... I know Cherish every single moment. <3
ReplyDeleteHe looks amazing for 14. It's all that great care he has had for his whole life.
ReplyDeleteTubby looks as though he is still enjoying life a lot, despite his problems. That is the main thing.

Tubby, you look great for your age - I'm sure it's because your 'rents take such good care of you. Look at you going after that chew toy! I hope you stay healthy and that your UTI clears up quickly!

Oh, what a sweetie. I've never had a dog make it to that age. I know it's hard to watch them aging, but as you said, you just have to make the most of any time that they are enjoying themselves. I hope his UTI clears up!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that Tubby is showing his age. It is so hard seeing our babies getting old before us! I hope the choline treatment and antibiotics helps clear up some of his ailments.
