June Brides, A Wedding Anniversary, and Tubby's Gotcha Day-Sort Of

For the past 500 hundred years June has been the traditional wedding month.  Reportedly the custom began  in the middle ages in order to coincide with the annual commoners bath, thus ensuring a less stinky bride and groom.

These days we might bathe daily, eliminating the concern over a smelly ceremony,  but June with its lovely weather and blooming flowers is still the perfect month for a wedding.

In honor of all June brides here are ten gorgeous vintage brides from my favorite style decades, the 1920s and 30s.

I love how happy this bride looks, its such a genuine smile.  I also love her shoes and ribbons and are those bells? hanging from her bouquet.  Image Source

The lace on this simple classic dress is amazing

Image source, This entire group, right down to the flower girl,  is so amazingly stylish I can't quite believe it.

This bride has the most beautifully detailed veil, I love the pearls.  Image Source,

Image Source, These two both look so happy and I love the trim on her veil and her bouquet!

What a supremely stylish couple.  I love his shiny top hat, white gloves, and carnation and her frothy veil.  Image Source,

Image Source, I love this brides glasses and the Grecian style headbands on her attendants.

This is a supremely stylish group, I particularly love the Maid of Honor's head band Image Source

Image Source, This is another picture where I am loving the Maid of Honor.  Look at the tilt of that hat!

Image Source, Angelic Halo Veils and long slim sleeves where popular in the 1930s.  This bride is a beautiful example of both.

13 years ago I myself was a June bride when I married my wonderful husband and we were doubly blessed when we received the most wonderful wedding present ever,  Tubby.

I apologize for this rather unflattering photo but its the oldest picture I have off Tubby, and he at least looks good.

Tubby was a gift from my mom and dad, who had never let me have a dog when I was growing up.   I'd always wanted a dog and John had spent a lot of time playing with his aunts' dogs and loved dogs too, but neither of us had ever had our own dog, and we were instantly smitten with him.  Tubby made us love not just him, but all dogs.  While June 2nd is technically not Tubby's gotcha day, we brought him home a week later when we returned from our honey moon, I still consider it a special day for both reasons.

When I got married in 2001 I wasn't wearing vintage as regularly as I do now, but I still loved it, and I did have a 1920s inspired wedding look:

I can't believe how young we look here, time sure flies.

and while Tubby wasn't present at the ceremony I was carrying a polaroid shot of him in my purse, sadly I've since lost the picture.

Finally, here is a song that always reminds me of my wedding,
Oh By Jingo!  As sung on the Jeeves and Wooster series.  A line from this song, Only one for me,  is inscribed on our wedding bands.

Verse

In the land of San Domingo
Lived a girl called Oh By Jingo
(Ta da, ya da da da da da, um-pa, umpa um-pa um-pa)
From the fields and from the marshes
Came the young and oh by goshes
(Ta da, ya da da da da da, um-pa, umpa um-pa um-pa)
They all spoke with a different lingo
But they all loved Oh By Jingo
and every night, they sang in the pale moonlight

Chorus

Oh by gee by gosh by gum by jove
Oh By Jingo won't you hear our love
We will build for you a hut
You will be our favourite nut
We'll have a lot of little Oh By Gollies
And we'll put them in the follies
Oh By Jingo said "By gosh by gee
By Jiminy, please don't bother me"
So they all went away singing
Oh by gee by gosh by gum by jove By Jingo
By gee, you're the only girl for me.

Verse

Oh, By Jingo had a lover
He was always under cover
(Ta da, ya da da da da da, um-pa, umpa um-pa um-pa)
Every night she used to meet him
Oh, how nice she used to treat him
(Ta da, ya da da da da da, um-pa, umpa um-pa um-pa)
They eloped but they were collared
And the gang stood there and hollered
'Don't raise a fuss, You've got to take one of us

Chorus

Oh by gee by gosh by gum by jove
Oh By Jingo won't you hear our love
We will build for you a hut
You will be our favourite nut
We'll have a lot of little Oh By Gollies
And we'll put them in the follies
Oh By Jingo said "By gosh by gee
By Jiminy, please don't bother me"
So they all went away singing
Oh by gee by gosh by gum by jove By Jingo
By gee, you're the only girl for me.

And look part of the song did come true!  We may not live in San Domingo but we do have a lot of little Oh By Gollies, now if only there where still follies around to put the in!

  7. Happy anniversary! And happy gotcha day, Tubby! Love all those old wedding photos - especially that smiling bride. So rare to see folks smile in old photos. We brought home some amazing old B&W photos (including wedding shots) from the hub's grandma's family on our recent trip back to Canada. Can't wait to hang them up. I wore a sorta vintage dress when we got married - it was my mom's dress and was 49 years old when I wore it!
