I wrote before about how I was nervous about Norbert, who will be 12 in July. Two weeks ago he started peeing inside and there was blood in his urine. We did a urine culture and he had a bladder infection, ecoli. We gave him antibiotics for two weeks and he improved immediately, right after the first pill. We did a urinalysis, but no culture, that was free of bacteria after the antibiotics were finished. However, after 4 days off the antibiotics the symptoms returned. Since we didn't do a full culture last time after finishing the antibiotics its possible that the infection wasn't knocked out completely. However, we know we used the right medication as we did a urine culture to start. My vet prescribed two more weeks of antibiotics since he thinks we simply didn't get all the infection. However, I am worried that these recurrent infections are the sign of a bigger issue, as he has never had them before and they are uncommon in male dogs. I googled, shouldn't have done that, and it is a symptom of bladder cancer. That got me super nervous even though my vet says its unlikely. Then my vet revealed the horrible news that he is leaving the practice. This is my favorite vet ever in 13 years, and I was reduced to tears by the news, crazy as that is. So we could use some positive vibes and also if anyone has dealt with any of the issues mom would appreciate any advice. Particularly if you have seen it in male dogs. I apologize if we haven't been by blogs enough lately Im just a bit stressed.
I am so sorry to read about Norbert. I have read that sometimes infections do "hide in the bladder walls" and one must go through several treatments of antibiotics. I am sending positive thoughts your way that maybe this will be the case. We, too, lost our vet of many years approximately 3 years ago and we are just now finding one that may suit us. It is hard to find a vet that will listen and work with what you want for your pet. We vet hopped quite a lot until recently. It was a good experience we learned what we could live with and what we could not in service. Hang in there! Get well soon Norbert!

Sometimes it does take more than one round of antibiotics to kick a strong bug, I am sorry to hear about your vet! Thinking of you, hugs.

How frustrating to lose a trusted Vet. Lots of good vibes that you get a positive answer and solution soon.
ReplyDeleteHope Norbert recovers more fully this time around!
ReplyDeleteMy vet sold his practice(due to compassion fatigue) after I'd been going there about 14 years. The worst part being, it sold to an investor, not directly to another vet. Like I'm going to trust that!
Oh no, I am so sorry Norbert's symptom returned. I hope two more weeks of antibiotics will work and he will be all okay. And I'm sorry your trusted vet is leaving. It's so hard with all these things, but please hang in there. I'm sending tons of positive thoughts to you.
ReplyDeleteOh dear we are sending positive thoughts across the Pond. No experience of these bladder problems, but certainly, with age, infections can take longer to clear up. It must be hard to lose a vet you know and trust, but the new one might be very good too.

Sending lots of healing pug power to Norbert. Hope this second round will do the trick. we have been lucky to have the same vet for many years. It helps to have the trust both ways, they know us and how we take care of our kids. Hopefully you will be able to find someone else you will have faith in.

I'm so sorry you are having health issues with Norbert and it's an awful time to be losing your vet. I haven't been able to stop by in a while due to life becoming crazy for the past month but fingers crossed things are back to normal and I'll be checking in to see how Norbert is feeling. Take care!
ReplyDeletesending positive thoughts for you and norbert. i hope it is just a stubborn infection but I know it is hard not to think the worst.
ReplyDeleteOh this is horrible. I'm so sorry about your worries. I don't know anything about those things as I have a cat and even she is my first pet as an adult so I have never been through animal illnesses etc. I do know that its imp. to step back and take a deep breath bc it will only help. Don't think negative thoughts bc it will only keep upsetting you and it wont be good for when you really need to focus and all that. I hope its nothing serious. HUGS!
ReplyDeleteI'm sending many good thoughts and healing wishes for Norbert and much strength for you. I know this is scary and stressful ...please keep us posted. Thinking of you!

I have no helpful advice to offer, but I'll think lots of positive healing thoughts for you and Norbert. xxx
ReplyDeleteWe so understand your concerns and why you are feeling stressed. Both Molly & Pip had bouts of infections where the antibiotics did not work and we had to have another longer and stronger course. We have our fingers and paws crossed this one works. Sending healing vibes and POTP. You both are in our thoughts and prayers. Do keep us updated.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Give the antibiotics a chance. We had to do a two rounder with Pepper (my Dalmatian). You have a good vet that you trust and that is a blessing.
ReplyDeleteOh I am just so sorry!
ReplyDeleteI hope everything works out ok for you and i'm sure it will! Google is the worst! Google will make the healthiest person feel like they have cancer symptoms etc...so I wouldn't read to much into the google thing, but maybe have your vet do further testing. I hope whatever new vet you take on meshes well with you guys.
