Vintage Outfit Post-Rocket to the Moon

I want to thank everyone who sent Tubby well wishes.  He seems more alert during the day but still confused at night. Thankfully his appetite is excellent.

The dress in this post isn't new to me at all, in fact its one of the first vintage inspired  things I bought approximately three years ago when I started really getting into vintage style.   Its a Trashy Diva 1950s style repro dress, and while the 50s aren't my usual decade being a sic-fi nut the print on this dress made it a must have for me.   I've worn it before on the blog too, specifically when I went to to a Star Trek convention (surely there isn't a more perfect convention dress out there).

So why am I posting about such an old dress now?  The reason is that sometimes you have an item in your closet for a long time and it takes awhile to gather the right accessories that really turn the item into a perfect outfit.  Thats the case with me and this dress.  Over the past three years I have added things to my closet that when combined with the dress make, what is for me at least, the perfect 1950s sci-fi outfit.  Now I don't pretend this look is in anyway accurate to the era, its more an interpretation of the 50s then an exact reenactment, but thats beside the point, its a really a fun look!  Its definitely very costumey but sometimes I kind of like that.

I think what took the dress to the next level is the mod cloth petticoat I wore under it:

It really shows the volume of the skirt and the 50s shape of the dress.

This is my first petticoat and I really like it.  It does feel bit like a costume, particularly in red, but its fun! Petticoats  may make your hips wider, but in doing so they sure make your waist look smaller which isn't a bad thing.  The  Miss L Fire shoes are pretty fun too.   A four year old girl ran up to me to ask me about them.  I was very flattered because I think four year olds often have better taste then adults (that probably explains this outfit).

For my birthday my husband generously gifted me with 1950s dead stock cats eye sunglasses that go perfectly with this dress.

Its hard to see in the photo but  they have little stars and rhinestones on them!  I've had the star hair clip forever, I can't even remember where I got it.

Maybe my favorite thing about the outfit though is the pin I'm wearing.  A blog reader generously sent it to me!   How sweet is that?  Its a retro Enterprise pin of course!

This outfit is now completely perfect, at least as far as I'm concerned, where as before it was just a cute dress.  Now I just have to nab some tickets for the NYC comic con this year, and if I do Ill certainly be wearing this!

My Old Man

Recently my husband and I have noticed some definite changes in Tubby, who just turned 14 March 29.   14 is an illustrious age for any dog and Tubby does show his advancing years.  He is definitely blind, and almost entirely deaf, he also has arthritis and neurological issues that cause hind end weakness.  Recently, we have noticed signs of doggie dementia as well.  Thank goodness he still recognizes us, but he is confused about time, for example he wakes up frequently at night, and seems to  be looking for meals at times other then meal times and then initially confused about eating at meal times.  Thankfully, his appetite is still good.  Since he has a suspected UTI right now, he is responding to antibiotics so knock on wood its nothing worse, he just had a full physical and the vet feels he looks good for 14.   We have started him on choline for the dementia but I don't see much change yet.  Its  hard to see him go down hill, especially so soon after losing Norbert, but we know we are lucky to still have him with us.    Any time he is happy and enjoying himself now is a double blessing which is why I got a thrill out of watching him enjoy this chew.

Happy Birthday Bob

Today Bob is 8 years old. I can hardly believe it!  It seems just yesterday he was a baby

Now he is all grown up!!

Today Bob is 8 years old, an advanced age for an English bulldog.  He isn't much for toys so his presents were all treats

He enjoyed unwrapping his presents

Sadly the place we have been getting dog birthday cakes from was closed so Bob had to settle for peanut butter ice cream. I don't think he minded

Happy birthday big boy!

Flapper Fashion Friday-Accesories Addition

I have a major weakness for 1920s fashions, the deco details of the free spirited flappers are just beautiful.  I vividly remember playing with a book of 20s paper dolls as a little girl.

As I cut and folded I imagined wearing the fabulos clothes myself one day, but when I grew up I was confronted with boring modern clothes. It took two decades but eventually I discovered the wonders of vintage style.  I don't actually have many 20s pieces in my wardrobe, they tend to be delicate, small, and pricey!  I'm beginning to rectify the wardrobe gap though, with accessories.  The first is an authentic 1920s cloche gat from Fab Gabs I used some gift money I received for my recent 37 birthday to purchase this beauty and I certainly don't regret it.

The condition of this hat is incredible!! Like new. I got plenty of positive comments when I wore it, including a loud "Gatsby" catcall from a passing truck ( not sure if that was positive or not).

Of course Repro twenties stuff is plenty fun too.  Like these cute shoes from American Duchess that I nabbed on sale a few months ago. Their plenty comfortable too, and I walk a lot.

I've got my first authentic flapper dress now too, look for a post on that in the coming weeks!  So my twenties may be far behind me, but it seems my 1920s journeys are just beginning.

Goodbye to a Friend

Our friends at lap dog creations lost their baby Zeus after 14 love filled years.  Run free big guy.

Return of the Bimple Ball

Years ago when Tubby was a young lad of 7 or 8 he had a beloved toy.  A small bumpy purple ball that had broken off some larger dog toy.  He eagerly chased it around the yard and under couches, barking like a mad pug.  For reasons unknown his father and I called it the Bimple ball. Sadly the reign of the Bimple ball was short lived. It was very small and got lost. Despite gifting him with many other small balls, nothing excited Tubbys passion's like the original.  Now in his twilight years Tubby spends most of his time sleeping, perhaps dreaming of a lost friend.

While shopping for the pup's a Easter basket this year John found a small bumpy purple toy.

A Planet Dog raspberry. It's not an exact replica, but it does bring to mind the Bimple ball.
Needless to say we bought it. At 14 Tubby's ball playing days are far behind him, but the new toy is right up Fry's alley. It's just the right size for his little pug mouth.

Happy Easter To You

Given my fondness for hats and for Fred Astaire it should come as no surprise that I love Easter.  I only really started getting into vintage two years ago, but in that time selecting my yearly Easter bonnet has been a favorite activity of mine.

Last year I had a great time at the 5th Avenue Easter Parade.  This year I thought it was just too cold to wear my Easter finery without a coat so we decided to have breakfast at a local diner and spend the day with the dogs.  I still wore my Easter outfit of course and I really think this may be my favorite vintage outfit ever.  The dogs had plenty of Easter finery too. Prepare for photo overload.

My dress is from Hey Day Vintage.   It's one of their Mary dresses, a 1940s style I really love. They are so comfortable, easy to wear, and figure flattering. My hat is fro Etsy shop Fab Gabs. It's a 1940s original and I got it months ago during one of their sales. I knew it was perfect for Easter. Today was my first time wearing it. My camera phone photos really don't do it justice.

I tried to get John to pose too, but he prefers to be the photographer. The pugs outfits are from Deb of pug possessed Etsy shop. So cute!!!!

Of course we had to reward the pups for their posing. They got a very nice basket. They really loved the lamb chop toy.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Easter.
