It's Pancake Day! Tasty Pancake Recipe for Dogs and Their Humans

Today is Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of lent when people are supposed to enjoy all the fatty, sugary, delicious foods they are meant to forgo during lent.  In the United Kingdom Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Tuesday and tradition dictates that you are supposed to eat pancakes.

Now we don't practice lent at our house but we certainly are not going to pass up pancake day!

Pancake day in Great Britain supposedly started when a house wife was frying breakfast pancakes and hearing the church bell realized she was running late.  She dashed out of the house, frying pan in hand.  Today there are pancake races held all over the United Kingdom.  Participants run while carrying a frying pan and flipping pancakes.  The tradition has even immigrated to the United States and is celebrated in some towns around the country.  Unfortunately, we have never seen a pancake race with our own eyes, but here are some adorable vintage photos of the festivities.

Even if you sadly, like myself, cannot find a pancake race to view or participate in at least you can make some really great pancakes.  The best thing about the following recipe, from my point of view, is that it is dog friendly as well as people friendly.  Yes with all that butter it is a little fattening, so make sure you give your dog a modest portion, but the yogurt is actually quite healthy for dogs and a little treat now and then is well worth it and they can work it off with a run after!   (Of course when serving to a dog forgo the syrup)

:-) Around here Fat Tuesday is celebrated with Punchki - Polish pastry with filling (similar to a jelly-donut.)

  5. Oohh, we love pancakes. I can't flip them standing at the stove so I'd be out of luck trying to flip them in a race. It would be great fun to try!

  6. I'm all about pancakes! :) A pancake race sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to watch... though I'd get depressed if the cakes feel and were spoiled! :(

  8. Great vintage photos! I especially like the second one, as it's teaming with classic, causal mid-century separates that any 40s/50s loving gal would be happy to sport nowadays, too.

  10. Here in the US it's often called Fat Tuesday and is popular for pancake fundraising dinners. I never heard of the pancake races - interesting idea, would be fun to do at one of those dinners.

  11. Mummy ate a ridiculous amount of pancakes last night. And despite giving her my saddest eyes, she didn't share any with me. She's such a meanie!
