-Thoughtless Thursday Lyndhurst Mansion

On April 12 we visited the Lyndhurst mansion with Bob in honor of his 7th birthday.  The Lyndhurst mansion

is a historic site in Tarry Town New York about 45 minutes outside New York City.  The gothic mansion and its surrounding grounds where built in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis.  The mansion passed through the hands of several families until the 1900s when it became the home of railroad magnate Jay Gould and his family.

In 1961 his daughter donated the mansion to the national historic trust preservation in her will.   From that time the mansion and ground have been open to the public.  You can tour the inside, but I never have, because the best thing about the Lyndhurst mansion is dogs are allowed on  the grounds!

  3. Hard to imagine living in such a house! Great that they allow dogs on the grounds, as so few places seem to.

  6. Magnificent place. Sort of like the 'summer homes' in Newport RI. We think the grounds would be the best part, too.

  9. Wow! Lyndhurst Mansion looks absolutely breathtaking. What a fine piece of gothic architecture. I like the tower and window designs, as well as the iconic gothic features. Awesome! It's always been my dream to live in a house much like that one. But just thinking about the cost of maintaining such property makes me think twice. Hahaha! Thanks for sharing, though!
