The Post We Didn't Want to Write

Norbert Nicholas Buglino-Dutcher July 2002-January 8, 2015

It is with great sadness that my husband and I had to say goodbye to our dear boy on the morning of January 8.  His body was failing and the nasal cancer was clearly so aggressive that the steroids where having no effect.   Norbert was not eating, not even chicken (his favorite), and he was having trouble walking and struggling to breathe.  His end was peaceful and we were with him and told him we loved him.  He had 12 and a half wonderful years and we are so greatful for that.   We are also greatful that the end was quick and he suffered only briefly.  He had a wonderful last Christmas.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone but I am not a traditionally religious person, though I respect all religions greatly.  My beliefs are best summed up by the Iris De Ment song let the mystery be:

As such I am not sure that I will "see" Norbert gain, nor is his Dad.  However, we are both comforted by the fact that Norbert is always with us because in the 12 and a half years he shared his life with us he made us into better people.  We adopted Norbert from a high kill shelter when we were 24 years old and we are now in our late 30s, he truly helped make us the people we are.   Norbert was a constant role model for me in his sweetness, loyalty, patience, kindness, and freedom from worry.   In moving past his loss I want only to strive to be more like him, and to live more as he did, day by day.

We will miss our boy every day but we will move forward and try to be as happy as he was and as he would want us to be and we will soon share the love we had for him with another dog, most likely a pug as we truly feel that Norbert was an "undercover pug."

We will be taking the next few weeks off from blogging to process our loss and to move forward but we will be on facebook.  Thank you all for your love and support it means more to us then you can ever know.

Note you may notice this post is different from what was here yesterday I don't know why bot blogger ate our original tribute post and when I checked it this morning big chunks of it were missing.  I couldn't let that be as I need a memorial for my boy I am afraid this one is not as good as the original, but of course no memorial would ever be fitting.

PS It's always a pleasure to listen to Iris DeMent. She's not that well known in the UK but I'm a big fan.

  11. Awww sweetie, I am so sorry to hear this. Its so easy to fall in love with our furbabies and then they stay with us for such a short amount of time. I don't what my life would be like without Sophie since she was my first baby. I wish your entire family all my best. Hugs!

  12. We didn't follow Norbert. You can't follow everybody otherwise it would be more than a full time job. While we didn't know Norbert, we do know what you're enduring. We made the same decision for out 12¼ year old rescue Scottie, Kyla, who was the heart and soul of our family. Now we're crying again but it is better to have known them than not to have them been part of us.

    1. I forgot to mention that Kyla had melanoma and went downhill quickly. It was only three weeks ago yesterday that she left us.

  17. Oh Katherine, I am so sorry to read sad news about your sweet Norbert. He did have a wonderful life in his warm home with his caring family. He was so lucky to have you who love him so much and appreciate how great he was. I'm sure he was a great role model for you. We learn a lot from our fur babies and they do make us better people. I'm glad he didn't suffer long and you could be with him to say good bye. I miss his beautiful smile. I hope time and happy memories help your heart heal. Hugs, Tamago

  35. I am very sorry for your loss. I am not at all offended by your post, and I am also a religious person. You have such a lovely blog and I enjoyed all your photos. God bless you, and I wish you all the best in 2015 and always.

  36. no matter how long we have them with us they always go too soon. i'm glad you were able to give him such a wonderful life full of love, and you loved him enough to know when it was time to let him go and not let him suffer. it is so so hard to make that decision. i like what you said about sharing the love you have for him with a new dog in your life. i really believe in that idea, when we lost our first pug it was do devastating, but getting Phyllis from animal control helped me to heal.

  38. Oh, I'm so sorry to catch up on your posts and see the news. I'm sorry you didn't get more time, but there is really no amount of time that would ever be "enough," is there? He'll always be with you in your hearts because love never dies. Hang in there.

  39. I'm so, so sorry. I fell behind in reading and have been trying to catch up. I'm all over the place in terms of your posts, but I'll get there.

I had no idea Norbert was even ill and I'm so sorry I wasn't here to offer you some support. I'm so grateful you found Norbert and he had you and your husband to offer him so much love. I know he knew how much you loved him.

If there is anything you need from me, please let me know. In the meantime I shall send you a giant HUG and know I am thinking of you all

    Run fast, run free Norbert.
