More POTP Needed

When I posted on Saturday just a little more then 24 hours ago I said Norbert was in no pain and despite his probably nasal cancer diagnosis doing well.  Sadly things have taken a turn for the worse and I can't believe how suddenly.   On Friday when Norbert saw the vet he had the occasional pinkish nasal discharge which he has on and off for two weeks and occasional snorting sounds, less then twice a day.   However, his breathing was good.  Sunday he started panting.  I made him the special anti cancer diet I had read about with turkey, blueberries, shitakes, etc and he wouldn't eat any of it.

However, he would eat some kibble with grilled chicken on top.

Last night, Sunday night, he was panting a lot and there was a whistling sound in his breathing.  He was still eager to go for his walk this morning but you can tell his breathing is more labored.  This is all very sudden.   No signs of a problem where seen earlier then two weeks ago, and Norbert goes to the vet every three weeks for acupuncture.   I can't imagine how we missed earlier signs.   I am calling the vet today to see if we can start steroids or piroxicam after he is weaned of his rimadyl.   Initially our vet said Norbert probably had months but I am now not sure.   We won't let him suffer and if he continues to worsen in his breathing we will have to say goodbye.

  5. I am behind in my blog reading and didn't see Saturday's post. I am so sorry Norbert is so sick. I truly know what you are going through. One thought on switching to the steroid (Prednisone I am guessing?)....When my sweet old boy Dylan was diagnosed with cancer, he had already been on Pred for a while due to his IVDD (back/disc disease). Not only did the Pred help retard the cancer, it was extremely helpful with arthritis pain since it is such a strong anti-inflammatory. So if you have to stop the Rimadyl, the steroid should continue to help with the arthritis pain, but of course comes with its own set of side effects. Increased hunger is one of those and can actually be helpful with a sick dog. I'll be thinking of you during this tough time.

  8. Sad news indeed. We've been through that 'is it time?' period...so worrying. We know you'll do the right thing for your boy. And he will probably tell you when it's time.

    Hugs and POTP.
