Continuing our series of educational film strips from the 1940s, 50s and 60s here is Are You Popular? A late 1940s gem this film explores the dynamics of popularity and dating, apparently parking is a no no but skating parties and weenie roasts are great ideas. My favorite line "Why is Caroline so popular......because she seems as interested in girls as in boys."
Wow. This is more like a parent's fantasy of what it was like to be a teenager. Although, I do wonder if it wasn't a little less blatantly disrespectful and rebellious than today. Also I think both boys and girls have a lot more freedom to be themselves, not stuck in the stereotypes featured here, and that's healthier I think.
It's always a blast to watch this film on Youtube (or now here). There is such a wonderful innocence to the line that your quoted. It makes one yearn for a (seemingly) simpler time when not everything was thinly veiled in sexual innuendo.
Oh I love these ;D The groovy shirt on the first guy that talks, wow!
ReplyDeleteOh and so surreal to hear these kids HINT but not blatantly talk about sex, tits, etc. NO, not how teens of any era communicate. Lies!

ReplyDeletePS> When I was growing up we didn't have skating parties but we had plenty of weenie roasts, and yes that's what they were called :D
